The Duke of Edinburgh's Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a programme with a rich history. Founded in the UK by Prince Philip, it now runs in more than 120 countries across the world – a truly global challenge.
The Award consists of three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. At Byron, we are proud to offer both Bronze and Silver across Years 10 – 12.
Within each level, students need to complete three different sections, which encourage them to work outside their comfort zone.
The Skill section – students need to start or continue learning a skill, for example, cooking or photography.
The Voluntary Service section – students need to start or continue volunteering in the community, for example, helping younger students at homework club.
The Physical Recreation section – students need to start or continue attending a sports club, for example, football/basketball/volleyball after school.
The final aspect of the Award is the Adventurous Journey, which consists of a 2 day hike for Bronze, and a 3 day hike for Silver.
Students are taught how to navigate, plan a route, put up a tent, cook on a stove and how to look after themselves in the great outdoors through a training weekend. They will then complete an assessed Adventurous Journey to complete their Award in some of the most beautiful locations in Greece.
