Byron Action

At Byron College, volunteerism goes beyond simply fulfilling a duty—it’s about taking Action to make a meaningful impact on the world. By engaging in community service projects, fundraising efforts, and volunteer initiatives across Athens, our students are empowered to be agents of positive change. These activities teach them the importance of collective responsibility and the power of small actions to create a larger ripple effect in society.

Through their volunteer work, students not only contribute to the well-being of the community but also develop a greater sense of Empathy and Cultural Awareness. For many, Athens is their adoptive or host city, and these experiences deepen their understanding of the challenges and opportunities that exist within modern Greece. By stepping outside the classroom and engaging with local issues, they learn firsthand how Collaboration, Integrity, and Leadership can bring about real-world solutions.

We believe that true education involves preparing students to be compassionate, active citizens who are equipped to make a positive difference. Through volunteerism, our students are learning that they have the power to drive change—not just in their immediate surroundings, but in the world at large. In doing so, they embody our values of Community, Action, Respect, and Excellence, setting the foundation for a lifetime of purpose-driven impact.

Harvest Festival

Seven sixth form students enjoyed volunteering to set up, serve and clear up the buffet at the St Paul’s Anglican Church Harvest Festival celebration that took place at the Kokotas estate in Stamata. The service and ensuing celebration was attended by many embassy officials as well as members of the local Anglican community. Our student’s contribution to making the event a success was greatly appreciated and they enjoyed the experience too!

Floods are one of the most common and destructive natural disasters in the world. Every year millions of people are affected by floods, losing their homes, livelihoods and loved ones. Greece has been one of the many countries affected by such extreme floodings which have recently displaced many people in areas such as Trikala, Magnesia, Larissa and Karditsa.

As a school we decided to take action, working with the Doctors of the World Greece, to collect donations that will help support the people in need in these desperate times in the hope that our efforts will help to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. Our donations include toilet paper, betadine, masks, mosquito repellent etc., items most required by those in need of immediate aid.

Byron Eco-Warriors : School Recycling Championship

The Region of Attica in collaboration with the Special Intergrade Association of the Prefecture of Attica (EDSNA) implemented an integrated information and awareness program for the promotion of recycling entitled “Recycling Championship”.

The championship is a continuation of the campaign “Give value to your trash” and involved 70 primary schools of the Prefecture of Attica and was implemented under the auspices of the Regional Directorate of Primary Education of Attica.

The aim was to contribute to information about recycling, its benefits and the gradual development of environmental awareness, through good practices to students, teachers and parents.

The league started in November 2022 and ended in June 2023.

Our amazing and enthusiastic Byron Eco Warriors: Jereen Uddin, Lois Mccinnes and Zoi Kalodiki participated in the Recyling Championship closing ceremony held in Pedion tou Areos Park.

They also contributed an upcycled water bottle art installation of a jellyfish made from over 200 water bottles collected by Byron staff and students. Year 6 students wished with this to express their concern on the overuse of plastic and raise awareness of the adverse effects plastic has on sea life.

We would like to inform you that the ‘Recycling Competition’ has started in our school. The competition is conducted by the Region of Attica in cooperation with EDSNA under the auspices of the Regional Directorate of Primary Education of Attica. The aim of this action is for our children to learn to recycle correctly and to strengthen their skills of material management. Throughout the competition, with the active help of the teachers, the children will be informed about the benefits of waste prevention, setting an example for all of us. We invite you to support our school’s effort by sorting recyclable materials (paper, plastic and aluminium) from your home and bringing them to our school.

Let’s set an example to our children for a clean and green environment.
