Senior School » Art
The Art department at Byron College is a stimulating, energetic and productive place of learning where high standards are expected from all pupils at all levels. Work is produced in many different mediums and in many different forms culminating in an eclectic end of year exhibition at Speech Day. A public exhibition of pupil Art work is also held each spring.
Art is encouraged through cross curricular activities, exhibitions and the participation in international Art competitions.
Art is taught by specialist teachers from grade 6 onwards, is compulsory in grades 7-9 and is a popular IGCSE and A-level choice.
In years 7-9 the pupils learning is project based, emphasizing practical work, research and development of ideas and techniques, knowledge of Art history (past and present), and creative expression across a wide range of media and subject matter.
The IGCSE course (examined by Edexcel) is delivered over two years with a ten hour timed practical examination at the end of the second year.
Sixth form pupils studying Art take the Edexcel AS one year course and can then opt to continue into the second year (A2) to take the full A level. For both years assessment is based on coursework and a timed practical examination at the end of each year.
Senior pupils, studying Art, should expect to be active in maintaining an exhibition of work within the school, producing scenery and props along with Drama pupils and to involve themselves in video and film work as well as the production of School DVD's, recording plays, activities and supplementing the School Year book.
Pupils studying Art at IGCSE or A level will find the web site "GCSE Bitesize" informative and helpful with preparation for their timed examinations. Follow the link below
