Physical Education

Sports play an important part in the life of the school.

Physical Education is a compulsory element in each child's timetable and we place much emphasis on the development of physical fitness and individual excellence but, perhaps more importantly, on the promotion of teamwork and pride in cooperative effort.

Each pupil is given the opportunity to take part in a variety of sports.

These mainly comprise:

  • football
  • volleyball
  • basketball
  • netball
  • swimming
  • athletics
  • squash
  • cross-country running
  • dance

School teams represent us in as wide a range of sports as possible in both local and international competitions and the school's trophy cabinet bears witness to the talent, hard work and success of our teams over the years.

Members of school representative teams should expect to train, practice and compete in fixtures after school hours.

Intra-mural competitions (House matches) are held in the disciplines of football, basketball, and volleyball and the junior and senior Sports Days are organised in May.

Byron College has integrated Physical Education into the mainstream of the school curriculum by asking all pupils to take part but also by making IGCSE Physical Education an academic option for public examination in which pupils not only sit a theory paper but are tested in practical skills and performance in four sports.

  Dance

Movement and dance are introduced early as part of every child's physical education.

Interest in dance can be maintained and developed well in to the senior classes as dance is offered as one of the IGCSE P.E. practical options.

An after-school Dance Club also thrives where the work concentrates on modern jazz choreographies which are then performed for the school, parents and friends on special occasions such as the Christmas Celebration, Cultural Evenings and Speech Day.

The senior girls dance group call themselves "Charm" for their performances and have recently presented dance routines to "When a Child is Born" and "One Heart".
