The study of both Geography and History is compulsory for all pupils in Grades 7, 8, and 9.
The subjects become optional in Grade 10 where a pupil can select one or both as IGCSE subjects to be studied for two years before examination.
Geography in Grades 7 to 9 (KS3) covers a diverse syllabus and also ensures that pupils learn and can apply a range of skills such as planning and designing investigations, data analysis, problem solving and role play.
This is an important part of Geography and integral to the various field studies conducted at this stage.
Grade 11 geographers sit for the Cambridge examinations and should expect to attend a 2 or 3-day field trip where they are asked to apply their practical skills and knowledge to a number of set assignments.
History in Grades 7 to 9 aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the cause and effect of historical events and to develop skills in academic writing and source analysis. Topics covered include the study of England in the Middle Ages, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, both World Wars and the post-war attempts at peacemaking.
The IGCSE course (examined by Cambridge) covers history in the modern world of the 20th Century and stresses academic writing and interpretation of historical evidence.
