Senior School » Senior Introduction
Welcome to the Senior School section.
In the Senior School at Byron College there are three stages or cycles to the programme of study offered.
Years 7-9 are three years of study that are characterised by a timetable which is largely obligatory; is broad, introductory; prepares children for specialist study of a subject in Year 10 and is designed to provide knowledge, develop skills, encourage curiosity and reward endeavour and commitment to high standards.
English is the medium of instruction and all pupils study both language and literature. Year groups are usually split into seperate groups for English - on the grounds of whether English is a child's first or second language. Children who join us with very little or no command of English are given customised timetables which ensure they are taught the language quickly, properly and are fully prepared to follow a full timetable.
Mathematics is usually taught in ability groups where children are provided with the most appropriate form of teaching and are given the opportunity both to extend themselves and compensate for weaknesses they may have.
General Science is taught to all pupils with the express purpose of providing them with the required knowledge and skills to continue with IGCSE studies in any of the specific subjects - Physics, Chemistry or Biology. In years 8 and 9 Physics is taught as a seperate subject which has proved especially beneficial to those children wishing to specialise in the subject later.
The humanities of History and Geography are both taught seperately and follow syllabuses that will give children those skills needed to do well in the subjects at IGCSE, later; a love for learning; the ability to work independently and in groups as well as that required background knowledge that will help to make the pupils more informed citizens and more responsible members of the world community.
Art and Drama are both part of the 7-9 curriculum and are subjects that we take very seriously in the school. The quality of work across a range of media and forms is always high and the outcomes from these classes are evidenced in exhibitions and performances throughout the year.
All pupils follow a course in Information Communication Technology (ICT) for 3 years. They are taught to use computers and important software properly. Pupils are given a solid introduction to theory and develop measurable competences that are vital to the quality of work in all subjects which will be rquired in their future studies.
Foreign languages are taught throughout years 7-9. Modern Greek is an important subject and is normally studied by all pupils who attend classes that are appropriate to their ability and relevant to their needs. Some pupils need to study the literature, culture and language of Greece as it may be their first language. Other pupils are being taught Greek for the first time. All pupils are given the opportunity to sit for Ellinomathia exams set by the Greek government.
French, Arabic, Spanish and Chinese are also offered but may need to be studied at after school Homework club.
