Speech Day - June 15th, 2007

The 2007 Speech Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony was held for pupils, over 400 parents and a guest list which included dignitaries from the Diplomatic Corps, the Local Authority and the Educational Community of Athens.

The pupils, as usual, were beautifully dressed and clearly very proud to either be receiving awards or to be supporting their peers who were being honoured.

The Guest of Honour this year was Professor George Stonehouse, Head of Business School at Napier University, whose address was very well received as it ranged over topics from Harry Potter to Greek football but finally focused on creativity. The pupils and guests were asked to consider what creativity is and how it can be measured but more importantly how it can be managed in pupils.

The awards ceremony was characterised by the joy and pride shown by the pupils, but... who asked the Junior boy recipients to bow?

Our Guest of Honour managed to say a few words to each award winner and expressed his pleasure at giving awards for achievements that were not always for simply getting the highest marks.

The Ian MacDonald Award was presented to Jonathan Scott and the Headmaster's Prize was awarded to Xanthipi Choraiti. The graduating pupils were presented by Dr Politis who stressed their academic, sporting and social qualities before Xanthipi was asked to make a short speech of farewell to a school that she joined 12 years ago and is now leaving to study at Oxford.

The evening's celebrations continued with a buffet for all guests, an exhibition of pupil artwork and the first public showing of the Byron College DVD, which accompanied the Yearbook and attempted, in a most humorous manner, to 'capture' the School year on film.

A most successful event concluded with tears for those leaving, best wishes for the summer and next year and the hope that next June Speech Day will once again be blessed by beautiful weather.
